Our solar system is located in the Milky Way galaxy. The Milky Way is a spiral galaxy that contains billions of stars, including our own sun. The formation of our solar system began approximately 4.6 billion years ago from a giant cloud of gas and dust. As the cloud collapsed under its own gravity, the sun formed at the center while the rest of the material flattened into a rotating disk. Within this disk, planets began to form as smaller clumps of material collided and stuck together. Over time, these clumps grew into the planets and moons we see today.
